Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy and the EYFS

Happy New Year 2010!

Well we're 2 weeks into 2010 already... my resolution to do less work and re-find some me-time has gone down the pan and I think I have my first cold coming on!

On the writing front, I am having fun putting together an e-book about Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy. In the process, I am learning lots of new things about myself and my own relationship with numbers.

I think a lot of us feel that we cannot 'do maths', often because of poor teaching at school and this rubs off on our attitudes to how we involve the children with counting and numbers...

Many childminders have told me they simply do not feel confident enough themselves with numbers, weights, time, measures etc to do activities with the children.

Yet most of the activity ideas I am suggesting in my PSR&N e-book happen during normal, daily play and involve the most basic skills... counting out fruit for snack, role playing supermarkets and adding a cash register, experimenting with egg timers etc.

It should be finished soon! When it is I will pop it on my website...

How will I ever have more time to myself when my head is buzzing with so many ideas? *shakes head in dismay and puts new Diana Gabaldon book back on shelf* LOL!

All the best to you and yours... I hope 2010 brings you health and happiness.
